Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
